Terms	Definitions
Abraham	A descendant of Shem; founder of the Hebrew Nation
Circumcision	The visible sign of God's covenant with Abraham.
Isaac	Son of Abraham and Sarah; born when they were very old.
Ishmael	Abraham's son by Hagar, Sarah's servant. The founder of the Arab tribes.
Lot	Abraham's nephew. He setlled in the prosperous plains, leaving Abraham in the wilderness of the hill country.
Moriah	The mountains around Jerusalem, where Abraham went to offer his son Isaac as a sacrafice.
Sarah	The wife of Abraham and mother of Isaac
Sodom	Along with Gomorrah, one of the cities of the plain destroyed by God because of wickedness
Ur	A city in the Plain of Shinar, the original home of Abraham
Canaan	The land God promised to Abraham's descendants. It covered about the same territory as modern Israel.
Esau	The elder of Isaac and Rebekkah's twin sons. The ancestor of the Edomites. He gave up his birthright for a bowl of Jacob's pottage.
Israel	The name given to Jacob after he wrestled with God. Also the name of the nation descended from him.
Jacob	The younger of Isaac and Rebekah's twin sons. He fooled his father into giving him the firstborn's blessing, becoming Isaac's heir.
Joseph	Jacob's favorite among his twelve sons. His envious brothers sold him as a slave.
Patriarch	A father who leads a family or tribe
Rachel	Rachel was the younger daughter of Laban
Rebekah	Wife of Isaac, mother of Jacob and Esau. She helped one of her sons in a plot to gain his father's blessing.
