Definitions

Beclomethasone (QVAR) glucccocorticoid; blocks late reacktion to allergen and airway hyperresponsiveness; decreases edema of airway mucosa; increases # of beta 2 receptors and their responsiveness to beta 2 agonist
Deltasone (Prednisone) gluccocorticoid; orally preferred; short term "burst" (3-10 days) for prompt control of poorly controlled persistent asthma; for long term preventionif s/s in severe persistant asthma
Triamcinolone (Azmacort) gluccocorticoid
Cromolynantiinflamm; stabalizes the cytoplasmic membrane of mast cells, thereby preventing release of histamine and other mediators; also inhibits eosinophils, macrophages, and other inflammatory cells; used for chronic asthma, bronchospasms induced by exercise (15 min); reduces intensity and frequency of attacks; allergic rhinnits
Albuterol (Proventil) beta 2 agonist; promote bronchodilation, suppresses histamine release in lung, increases ciliary motility; used for asthma attack; if inhaled, fewer s/e
Theophylline (Uniphyl) methylvanthine; check plasma level!!! narrow therapeutic range; leads to gi upset, ulcer, increase hr, hypokalemia, seizure, just like caffeine; oral NOT inhaled!!!;
Ipratropium (Atrovent) anticholinergic antiinflamm.; an atropine derivative; used for COPD, bronchospasm, common cold, quick relief of asthma; slower than albuterol or other beta 2 agonist
Loratadine (Claritin) antihistamine; second generation; blocks action of histamine at histamine receptor sites and inhibits bronchial constriction; avoid with 3rd trimester, nursing mothers, newborns; s/e rare
Promethazine (phenergan) antihistamine; first generation; s/e more common than second gen
Dexamethasone (Decadron) gluccocorticoid; pregnancy C; adrenal corticosteroid; prevents accumulation of inflammatory cells at site of infection, inhibits phago and lysosomal enzyme release; used for adrenal insufficiency, allergic states, collagen disease, hematologic disorders, cerebral edema, Addisonian shock, RA;
Prednisone Adrenal Corticosteroid; pregnancy C; immediate acting synthetic analog of hydrocortisone; used in cancer therapy, myasthenia gravis,
Cortisone synthetic adrenal corticosteroid; Preg D; short acting with prominent glucocorticoid activity; converts to cortisol in body; used for replacement therapy for primary or secondary adrenocortical insufficiency.
