The speaker proceeds without interruption or argument, and the effect on the reader is that of hearing just one side of a conversation. A part spoken by only one character about something. |
| allusion | a brief reference, within a work, to something outside the work that the reader or audience is expected to know. |
| comic relief | humorous scene, incident, or speech that is included in a serious drama to provide a change from emotion |
| aside | A character's remark, either to the audience or to another character, that others on the stage are not supposed to hear. The purpose is to reveal the character's private thoughts. Asides are usually spoken to the audience. |
| soliloquy | A speech the character gives when he or she is alone on the stage. It is to let the audience know what the character is thinking. |
| pun | A joke that comes from a play on words. |
