Respiratory System terms- CC CHALLENGE A

How does the respiratory system work?
Inspired air rich in oxygen enters the body through the nostrils or mouth. It passes through the pharynx and larynx, or voice box, and into the trachea. Air then enters each bronchus, which branch into bronchioles, and finally into the alveoli, or air sacs of the lungs. The lungs are housed in the thoracic cavity that is bound on the bottom by a thin layer of muscle, the diaphragm. Each lunch is covered by a very thin pleual membrane. In the alveoli, carbon dioxide is exchanged to oxygen.

The Gas Exchange: GAS: _______INHALED:___ EXHALED:
Oxygen (O₂) __ 20.71% __ 14.6%
Carbon dioxide (CO₂)__ 0.04% __4.0 %
Water (H₂O)__ 1.25%__ 5.9%
Nasal passage- The opening that connects a sinus to the nasal cavity.
Nostril(s)- The two (2) passages through the nose from which oxygen can be inhaled and exhaled.
Mouth- An opening in the head. Able to receive food and saliva. It's able to open and close itself with the jaw bones.
Epiglottis- Is a flat of elastic cartilage tissue covered with mucus membrane, attached to the entrance of the larynx.
Larynx- Commonly called the 'voice box' it's an organ in the neck of mammals involved in protecting the trachea and sound production.
Pharynx- An organ attached to the larynx, divided into three (3) sections. It's part of the digestive system and the respiratory system. It's also important in vocalization.
Trachea- (aka 'windpipe') is a tube ringed with cartilage that connects the pharynx and larynx to the lungs, allowing air flow.
Bronchus, Bronchi- is a two way passage of airway that conducts air into the lungs. The bronchus later branch into smaller and smaller tubes called bronchioles.
Bronchioles- Are the first airway branches that no longer are ringed with cartilage. They are branches of the bronchus.
Alveoli- The air bags where the gas exchange takes place
Diaphragm- The thin sheet of muscle that extends across the bottom of the rib cage, separating the thoracic and abdominal cavities.
Lungs- The essential respiration organ in air breathing life. There are two (2) lungs, one on either side of the heart. shes country, jason aldean
Pleura- Is a serous membrane which has two layers, the thin space between the two pleual layers is called the pleual cavity, the second layer is a mucous layer on the outside.
