| Dred Scott v. Sanford | He was a slave who was taken to a free state. He claimed that he was no longer a slave because he lived in a free state. Supreme Court ruled that he was still a slave because he was not guaranteed the same rights as citizens. |

| Affirmative Action | Giving equal opportunity to people to attend schools, get jobs and find housing who had previously been denied because of race |
| University of California v. Bakke | He applied to medical school and was turned down. His scores were too low but were higher than the scores used to admit minority students based on the schools quota. His claim was reverse discrimination. Supreme Court agreed. |
