Dred Scott v. SanfordHe was a slave who was taken to a free state. He claimed that he was no longer a slave because he lived in a free state. Supreme Court ruled that he was still a slave because he was not guaranteed the same rights as citizens.

Civil Rights Act of 1991Added to the Act of 1964 by providing damages to individuals (employed) who were intentionally discriminated against
Affirmative ActionGiving equal opportunity to people to attend schools, get jobs and find housing who had previously been denied because of race
University of California v. BakkeHe applied to medical school and was turned down. His scores were too low but were higher than the scores used to admit minority students based on the schools quota. His claim was reverse discrimination. Supreme Court agreed.
Nineteenth AmendmentGave women the right to vote
Title IXProvided that there could not be discrimination based on gender in any federally funded program
Americans with Disabilities ActDefined disability; Required that buildings be able to accommodate the handicapped; illegal to discriminate based on disability
