Definitions

Density can be defined as the amount of... mass within the volume of an object.
Density Formula: D = M/V
A cubic centimeter measures... volume. It's cubic because it involves 3 dimensions: a length, a width, and a height.

Also be aware that:

1 cubic centimeter = 1 ml
Some common metric units for density: grams/liter

grams/ml

grams/cubic centimeter (usually applies to solids)
If the density of an object is less than the density of the fluid it is placed in, the object will... float.
If the density of an object is greater than the density of the fluid it is placed in, the object will... sink.
If the density of an object is equal to the density of the fluid it is placed in, the object will... float wherever it is placed.
Practice Question #1:
A diamond has a mass of 1.75 grams and a volume of 0.5 cubic centimeters. Find the density of the diamond.
M = 1.75 grams
V = 0.5 cubic centimeters
D = ?

D = M/V

D =1.75 grams divided by 0.5 cubic centimeters

D = 3.5 grams/cubic centimeters
Practice Question #2:
A rock has a volume of 2.0 milliliters and a density of 4.0 grams/milliliter. What is the mass of the rock?
D = 4.0 grams/milliliter
M = ?
V = 2.0 milliliters

D = M/V

4.0 grams/milliliter = M/2.0 milliliters

Feel free to solve the equation listed above using the "butterfly," "friends across," "friends up & down" or any method with which you are most comfortable.

M = 8.0 grams

Don't forget to check.
Practice Question #3:
A liquid has a mass of 2.0 grams and a density of 1.0 gram/milliliter. What is the volume of the liquid?
D = 1.0 grams/milliliter
M = 2.0 grams
V = ?

D = M/V

1.0 gram/milliliter = 2.0 grams / V

Feel free to solve the equation listed above. using the "butterfly," "friends across," "friends up & down" or any method with which you are most comfortable.

V = 2.0 milliliter

Don't forget to check.
If two objects have equal volume, but one has more mass, the one with more mass is... more dense!
Buoyancy can be defined as the... upward force that fluids (liquids or gases) exert on an object immersed in it.
If the buoyant force of the fluid is equal or to the object's weight, the object will... float.
If the buoyant force of the fluid is less than the object's weight, the object will... sink.
The weight of a rubber duck is 12 N. The duck is placed in water that has a buoyant force of 14 N. Determine what will happen to the duck. The duck will float since the upward force of the water is greater than the weight of the duck.
List one way to make water more dense. Add salt!
What concept helps scientists when an oil spill happens in the ocean? The concept that helps scientists is density. Oil is less dense than water so it floats on top of the water making it easier to clean up the ocean.
Two factors (variables) that have an effect on density are... temperature and pressure.
As temperature increases, density... decreases because the atoms get further apart.

When temperature decreases, density increases because the atoms get closer together.

One exception to this concept is water. When water freezes it expands and becomes less dense than liquid water and this is why ice floats in water.
As pressure increases, density... increases because the atoms get closer together.

When pressure decreases, density decreases because the atoms get further apart.
