REVIEW!!! Know how to answer some of these questions in paragraph form for the quiz. (Mrs. McManis's advice) :)
Battle of the AlamoThe Mexican army reached a small mission called the Alamo in the middle of a small settlement in San Antonio. The Texans only had a cannon and little gun powder. Also, they only had 150 soldiers to fight against the 4,000 mexicans. 32 soldiers were later added to the Texans. Among those soldiers were Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, and the 25 year old commander, William Travis. For 12 days, the defenders of the Alamo kept Santa Anna's army at bay with rifle fire. On March 6, 1836, the Mexicans launched an all-out attack. They climbed over the walls and killed everyone except a few women and children, and then he burned all the dead bodies. This included Jim Bowie, William Travis, and maybe Davy Crockett. The Americans were furious! Santa Anna responded with saying,"The Texans fought more like devils than men!"
Battle of San JacintoIn the Battle of San Jacinto, two battle cries were formed. They were "Remember the Alamo!" and "Remember Goliad!" The Texans were out numbered 800 to 1,300, so they decided to have a surprise attack. They waited until the Mexicans took their siesta. (nap) The Texans ended up killing 600 soldiers, and they captured 700 including Santa Anna. Santa Ana later signed a treaty recognizing Texas's independence on May 14, 1836.
The Lone Star RepublicThe Lone Star Republic is what they called Texas when it was its own country. Sam Houston was elected president of this country. Texas asked the U.S congress if they could become a state in the U.S, but they said no. They declined this request because it would upset the balance of free and slave states in Congress. Texas was its own country for nine years until they finally became a state one December 29, 1845.
