| Term | Definition |
| partially permeable | A characteristic of cell membranes. They let some molecules through but not others |
| osmosis | The movement of water across a partially permeable membrane |
| active transport | The movement of molecules across a cell membrane against a concentration gradient |
| fluid mosaic model | Theory which describes cell membrane structure and behaviour |
| organelle | A structure inside a cell which has a specific function |
| cristae | The folded inner membrane of a mitochondrion |
| smooth endoplasmic reticulum | The structure composed of membranes which process lipids inside cells |
| rough endplasmic reticulum | The structure composed of membranes which folds and processes protiens |
| cell surface membrane | The site of receptor molecules which allow a cell to respond to chemicals like hormones |
| golgi apparatus | Site of final processing of proteins |
| vesicles | Fluid-filled sacs which transport proteins through the cytoplasm |
| secretion | The process by which usefull cellular products leave the cell |
| permeability | the property of cell membranes that allow materials to pass through them |
| phospholipids | The molecules which form a continuous double layer in the cell surface membrane |
| protein | The molecule which float in the bilayer and often form channels through the membrane |
| glycoprotein | Proteins, with a polysaccaride chain attatched, found in cell membranes |
| glycolipids | Lipids, with a polysaccaride chain attatched, found in cell membranes |
| cholesterol | The name of a lipid, found in cell membranes, and also a precursor of steroids. |
| alcohol | A solvent which increases the premeability of cell membranes by disolving lipids |
| denatured | The state when proteins are so damaged that they can no longer regulate membrane permeability |
