Cell
The basic unit of structure and function in a living thing.
Cell Membrane
The outside boundary of the cell
Nucleus
The control center that directs the cell's activities and contains the information that determines the cell's form and function.
Cytoplasm The material within a cell apart from the nucleus.
Tissue A group of similar cells that perform the same function.
Muscle Tissue A body tissue thta contracts or shorten, amking body parts move
Nervous Tissue A body tissue that carries electrical messages back and forth between the brain and every other part of the body.
Connective Tissue A body tissue that provides support for the body and connects all of its parts.
Epithelial Tissue A body tissue that covers the surfaces of the body, inside and out.
organ A structure that is composed of different kinds of tissue.
Organ System A group of organs that work together to perform a major function.
Homeostasis The process by which an organism's internal environment is kept stable in spite of changes inthe external environment.
Stress The reaction of your body to potentially threatening, challengeing, or distrubing events.
Skeleton The inner framework made up of all the bones of the body
Vertebrae The 26 small bones tat make up the backbone
Joint A place in the body where two bones come together
Ligaments A strong connective tissue that hold bones together in moveable joints
Cartilage A connective tissue that is more flexible than boen and that protects the ends of bones and keeps them from rubbing together
Compact Bone A hard,dense bone tissue that is beaneath the outer membrane of a bone.
Spongy Bone
Layer of bone tissue having many small spaces and found just inside the layer of compact bone
Marrow The soft connective tissue that fills the internal spaces in bone.
Osteoporosis a condition in which the body's bones become weak and break easily
Involuntary Muscles A muscle that is not under conscious control
Voluntary Muslces A muscle tha tis under conscious control
Skeletal Muscles A muscle that is attached to the bones of the skeleton and provides the force that moves the bones.
Tendon Storng connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone
Striated Muscle A muscle that appears banded; also called skeletal muscle
Smooth Muscle Involuntary muscle found inside many internal organs of the body
Caridac Muscle Muscle tissue found only in the heart
Epidermis The outer layer of the skin
Melanin A pigment, or colored substance, that gives skin its color
Dermis The inner layer of the skin
Pore An opening through wich sweat reaches the surface of the skin
Follicle Structure in the dermis of the skin from which a strand of hair grows
Cancer A disease in which some cells in the body divide uncontrollably
