Exaggeration or Caricature | Writers and artists will typically exaggerate and distort the target in certain ways in order to emphasize the characteristics he or she wishes to attack. |
Irony | Writers and artists will often use humorous situational irony to attack their target—often to point out hypocrisy in human behavior. |
Reductio ad absurdum (Reduction to the Absurd) | The writer/artist agrees enthusiastically with the basic attitudes or assumptions he or she wishes to satirize and, by pushing them to a logically ridiculous extreme, exposes the foolishness of the original attitudes and ideas. |
Parody | Writers and artists will imitate another recognized style or idea in a way that draws attention to the flaw or harm they are attempting to expose |
Comparison/Juxtaposition | The writer or artist juxtaposes two characters or ideas. The target of the satire is more easily exposed as madness when compared with a sensible example. |
