lateral away from midline, the outer side of the body

anterior (ventral) toward the front of the body
(ex. the breastbone is anterior to the spine)
posterior (dorsal) toward the back of the body

inferior (caudal) toward lower part of a structure or body
(ex. the navel is inferior to the chin)
superior (cranial) toward the head or upper part of a structure or body
(ex. the head is superior to the abdomen)
internal (deep) inside, away from the body
(ex. the lungs are internal to the skin)
external (superficial) outside, toward or at the body surface
(ex. the skin is external to the skeletal muscles)
proximal nearer to, closer to the origin of the body part or point of attachment of a limb
(ex. the elbow is proximal to the wrist)
distal farther from, farther from the origin of the body part or point of attachement of a limb
(ex. the knee is distal to the thigh)
supine laying face up
prone laying face down
plantar sole of the foot
palmer palm of hand
anatomical position body erect, feet mid dorsi-plantar flexed, thumbs pointed laterally, palms turned anteriorly
median (sagittal) plane right and left divisions, vertical, midline, center of gravity
transverse plane upper and lower divisions (horizontally), superior and inferior parts, cross section
frontal plane (coronal plane) front and back divisions, vertical, anterior and posterior parts
