matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space. |
mass | The amount of matter in an object. |
conductor | A substance that allows heat, electricity, and/or sound to pass through it easily. |
insulator | A substance that does not allow heat, electricity, and/or sound to pass through it easily. |
refraction | The bending of light waves. |
concave Lens | A shape that bends light outward |
convex Lens | A shape that bends light inward. |
absorb | The process where matter takes in or traps radiant energy. |
transmit | The process where radiant energy travels through matter. |
mixture | When two or more substances are mixed together and can be physically separated. |
solution | When two or more substances are mixed together but cannot be easily separated. |
weight | A measure of the pull of gravity on an object. |
physical change | The appearance of matter changes but the matter does not. |
physical property | Characteristic of matter that can be observed using your senses. |
volume | The amount of space that an object takes up |
density | The amount of mass an object has in a known volume |
solubility | The ability of a substance to be dissolved. |
solid | Matter that has a definite shape and a definite volume. |
liquid | Matter that has a definite volume but no definite shape. |
gas | Matter that does not have a definite shape or volume. |
vibrate | Move back and forth rapidly. |
sound | Form of energy produced by vibrating objects |
kinetic Energy | Energy of motion |
potential Energy | Energy that is stored in an object. |
state | one of the three main forms of matter |
odor | how a substance smells |
melting point | the temperature which a substance changes from a solid to a liquid. |
texture | how a substance feels or looks |
boiling point | the temperature which a substance changes from a liquid to a gas. |
magnetic | substances attracted to objects containing iron. |
invisible | cannot be seen |
dissolve | to form a solution with another substance |
force | a push or pull |
friction | a force that works against motion |
motion | movement |
inertia | the tendency of an object to resist a change in motion |
gravity | the force that pulls objects toward one another |
light | a form of energy that travels in waves and in empty space |
reflection | the bouncing back of light waves |
energy | the ability to cause change in matter or make things happen. |
solar energy | the energy from the sun |
electrical energy | Energy that an object has because it has charged particles. |
current | the movement of electricity in a certain path |
opaque | materials that completely block the light waves from being transmitted; |
transparent | materials that allow light to pass through easily. |
translucent | materials that partially allow light to pass through. |
property | a characteristic used to describe matter |
solute | the substance that is dissolved in another substance |
solvent | the substance that dissolves another substance |
buoyancy | the ability to float |
complete circuit | a closed path through which electricity travels with no breaks in the path |
mechanical energy | energy that an object has because of where it is and how fast it is moving |
thermal energy | produces heat |
light energy | energy you can see that moves in waves and travels in a straight line |
sound energy | energy that moves in waves and is caused by vibrating objects |
heat energy | the movement of thermal energy |
circuit | the path that electric current flows through |
