Definitions

cancer rapid growth of abnormal cells in the body which may form tumors
Tumors Abnormal growths produced by cells
Benign tumor abnormal growth produced by cells that are not cancerous
Malignant abnormal growth produced by cells that are cancerous
metastasis the spread of cancer cells
carcinoma the most common type of cancer, often lung, colon, breast and ovarian cancers
sarcoma cancer found in the bone, cartilage, fat and muscle
Lymphoma Cancer that begins in the lymph nodes of the body's immune system which includes two types: Hodgkin's and Non-Hodgkin's
Leukemia Cancer in the blood cells that grow in the bone marrow and found in large numbers in the bloodstream
immune system a network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to defend the body against attacks by "foreign" organisms
Foreign organisms bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses.
Pathogens organisms that cause disease
antigen a foreign substance that stimulates the immune system to attack
immune response how your body recognizes and defends itself against bacteria, viruses, and substances that appear foreign and harmful
lymphocytes white blood cells, they form antibodies that make it easier for the immune system to fight the foreign organisms
allergens substances that can cause the body to react
Allergies inappropriate immune responses to substances that are usually harmless
Immune deficiency diseases disorders in which your resistance to disease becomes dangerously low
Autoimmune disease diseases causing your immune system to attack your own body's cells and tissues by mistake
Hives red and itchy bumps on your skin caused most commonly by allergic reactions to foods, medicines, latex and internal disease
AIDS Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, it is the most advanced stage of HIV
HIV Human immunodeficiency virus, a virus that kills or damages cells of the body's immune system
Bacteria one-celled germs that multiply quickly and may release chemicals which can make you sick
Viruses capsules that contain genetic material and use your cells to multiply
fungi primitive vegetables, like mushrooms or mildew
protozoa one-celled animals that use other living things for food and a place to live
MRSA Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, a bacteria that causes staph infection
Tuberculosis a bacterial infection caused by a germ called mycobacterium tuberculosis which attacks the lungs
Antibiotics powerful medicines that fight bacterial infections. can save lives. They either kill bacteria or keep them from reproducing. Your body's natural defenses can usually take it from there.
Immunity the ability of the body to repel foreign organisms that cause disease
Vaccines help make you immune to serious diseases without getting sick first and work best when given at certain ages
Plasma This is the liquid part of the blood. It is often used to add volume to the blood system after a large loss of blood
Cryoprecipitate a concentrated source of certain plasma proteins. It is used to treat some bleeding problems.
red blood cells These carry oxygen from the lungs to other parts of the body and then they carry carbon dioxide back to the lungs. A low count is called anemia. A transfusion may be needed to treat anemia
White blood cells These help fight infection, bacteria and other substances that enter the body. When the count becomes too low, it is called Neutropenia.
Platelets These help blood to clot. Platelet transfusions are given when the platelet count is too low
Transfusion the process of giving blood products through an
intravenous (IV) catheter.
Crossmatching Taking a sample of blood to find the type and match it with the donor blood in order to decrease the chance of a reaction
Leuko white
emia blood
leukemia the formation of abnormal white blood cells in the blood
leukemia cells abnormal white blood cells which don't die when they should and crowd out normal blood cells
watchful waiting Not getting cancer treatment right away
Remission The process of destroying signs of leukemia and making symptoms go away

-emesis vomiting
-emia blood condition
