How does Ritual work with Time in a religious sense? | Ancient people saw time as seasonal. They believed that gods controlled the seasons. They marked seasons of growth and hunting with rituals. These were earliest forms of religious worship. (Much more detail in the book. Page 250-251) |

Liturgical Year | 12 months of seasons and feasts that recall different aspect of Jesus' life, death and Resurrection, his return to the Father, and his sending of the Holy Spirit. |
Purpose of the Liturgical Year | To provide us with the opportunity, over time, to absorb the Christian story, the mystery of our salvation, and to celebrate how it is happening in our own life. |
How should we experience the liturgical year each year? | We must be open to the presence of God in our joys and struggles. |
Start of the liturgical year | Late Nov. or early Dec. with the start of the season of Advent. |
Heart of the liturgical year, and why? | Easter. The celebration of Easter sheds its light on the whole year. |
Advent | Purple, symbolizes preparation. Begins four Sundays before Christmas, ends after midafternoon prayer on Christmas Eve. |
Christmas | White, symbolizes joy. Celebrates the Incarnation. Ends with evening prayer on the feast of the baptism of the lord. Other major feasts: feast of the Presentation of the Lord |
Lent | Purple, symbolizes preparation. Begins on Ash Wednesday. 40 days long. Practices we use: Fasting, Abstaining, Being more Self-Disciplined, Praying, and Giving Alms. |
Triduum | Red, symbolizes the passion and death of Jesus. Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. Begins on Holy Thursday and ends right before the Easter Vigil. |
Easter | White, symbolizes joy. Begins on the Easter Vigil and ends on Pentecost. 50 days long. Celebrate Ascension Thursday and Pentecost Sunday during this time period. Associated with Gospel Of John. |
Ordinary Time | Green, symbolizes life. Covers about 60% of the liturgical year. Full of feast days of saints, All Saints' Day, All Souls' Day. |

Where is God revealed to us? | Everything human, and all creation. |
Grace | God's loving, active presence in the world. |
Symbol | Tangible thing representing something intangible |
Ritual | Concrete, visible actions that have meaning for a group or community. May be tempted to do them as a routine, resulting in the loss of their meaning. |
Fundamental Sacrament of God | Jesus, because he is the means by which God has communicated everything God is to us humans in a concrete, tangible way. |
Sacrament of Jesus | The Church because it is meant to be 'Jesus walking around in the flesh' The church embodies Jesus' sacrificial love by announcing God's love for all. |
Seven Sacraments of the Catholic Church | Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Marriage. |
3 categories of the sacraments | Initiation, Healing, and Service. |
Initiation | Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation. Welcome people into the community of faith. |
Healing | Penance and Anointing of the Sick. Cleansing of body, mind, and spirit. |
Service | Holy Orders and Marriage. Brings people into particular ministries in the church as ordained clergy or as married people. |
Sacrament | Outward sign to show God's grace. |
Baptism | Is about being welcomed into a new life in the community of Jesus. Adults were the only ones baptized in early centuries of the church, they did this to show that they were rejecting Roman state religion. Essential part=Water Rite |
RCIA | Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. |
Catechumens | People going through RCIA. They receive Sacraments of Initiation on the Easter Vigil. |
Confirmation | Receive the Holy Spirit. In the early church, received on the Easter Vigil with Baptism and Eucharist. Usually presided over by the bishop. Essential Rite= Bishop's anointing of the candidate's forehead with sacred oil while saying the words, "Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit." |
Eucharist | Represents the central saving act. A.K.A. Mass. Two essential parts= Liturgy of the Word and Liturgy of the Eucharist. |
Penance | Purpose is to bring people back to God through forgiveness. A.K.A. Reconciliation. |
Sinning hurts ________ | Everyone |
Anointing of the Sick | It is about healing the hurts of life. Used to be commonly referred to as Last Rites. However, this wasn't a good way to describe it because it is meant for anyone needing healing, not those about to die, etc. Main symbolic act= Laying on of hands and anointing with oil by the priest. |
Holy Orders | Celebrates the ordained clergy. Only men can receive this sacrament. |
Marriage | Celebrates friendship |
