Describe the soil in temperate forests. | It is rich in humus. Humus keeps the soil moist and is rich in nutrients. |

Describe the soil in a tropical rain forest. | Soil is not very rich in plant nutrients. The nutrients are only in a thin, top layer of soil. Hard clay lies below. |
Describe the emergent layer. | The tallest trees reach the emergent layer. Their branches form a canopy. |
What are buttresses? What do they do? | Buttresses are special root structures that spread out from the trunk. They help support tall trees. |
Describe the understory layer. | This layer doesn't get much light. It is comprised on plants that grow in the canopy. Most plants that grow here have very large leaves. |
Describe the forest floor. | It is dark and damp. |
Describe coniferous trees. | They stay green all year. They have thin, needle-like leaves that are tough and waxy. |
