exponential growth | growth pattern in which the individuals in a population reproduce at a constant rate |
environment | all of the surrounding things, conditions, and influences affecting the growth or development of living things. |
ecology | the branch of biology concerned with the relations between organisms and their environment |
environmental science | the systematic, scientific study of our environment as well as our role in it. |
capital | wealth in the form of money or property owned by a person or business and human resources of economic value |
solar capital | Energy from the Sun |
natural resources | resources (actual and potential) supplied by nature |
natural capital | the natural resources and natural services that keep us and other species alive and support out economies |
solar energy | energy from the sun that is converted into thermal or electrical energy |
environmentally sustainable society | Society that satisfies the basic needs of its people without depleting or degrading its natural resources and thereby preventing current and future generations of humans and other species from meeting their basic needs. |
living sustainably | means living off natural income replenished by soils, plants, air and water and not depleting or degrading the earth's endowment of natural capital that supplies this biological income |
doubling time | the time required for a population to double in size |
rule of 70 | Doubling time (in years) = 70/(percentage growth rate). See doubling time, exponential growth. |
gross national product (GNP) | the total value of all goods and services produced by a country |
gross domestic product (GDP) | The total output of all economic activity in the nation, including goods and services. |
gross world product (GWP) | the market value in current dollars of all goods and services produced in the world during a year. |
per capita GNP | the GNP divided by the country's total population |
developed countries | countries with strong economies and a high quality of life |
developing countries | countries with less productive economies and a lower quality of life |
globalization | The trend toward increased cultural and economic connectedness between people, businesses, and organizations throughout the world. |
perpetual resource | A resource such as solar energy that is renewed continuously. |
renewable resource | any natural resource (as wood or solar energy) that can be replenished naturally with the passage of time |
sustainable yield | Highest rate at which a renewable resource can be used indefinitely without reducing its available supply |
nonrenewable resource | materials found in nature that CANNOT be renewed or replaced |
ecological footprint | The amount of biologically productive land and water needed to support a person or population. |
pollution | Release of harmful materials into the environment |
point sources | discharge pollutants at specific locations through drain pipes, ditches, or sewer lines into bodies of surface water. |
nonpoint sources | broad, and diffuse areas, rather than points, from which pollutants enter bodies of surface water or air. |
common-property resource | Resource that people normally are free to use; each user can deplete or degrade the available supply. Most are renewable and owned by no one. Examples are clean air, fish in parts of the ocean not under the control of a coastal country, migratory birds, gases of the lower atmosphere, and the ozone content of the upper atmosphere (stratosphere). See tragedy of the commons. |
free-access resource | See common-property resource. |
