republic Also called a representative democracy. Where people elect others to run the government for them.
Senate The ancient Roman group that ran the most important parts of the government.
Hannibal Carthaginian general who attempted a rebellion against Rome.
Gracchi Roman brothers who suggested reforms to help the lower classes and were killed for their efforts.
Marius Ancient Roman who bribed and rewarded his generals, making them loyal to him rather than the government. Defeated by Sulla.
Sulla When the Senate refused to give him power, he marched on Rome and took control of the Senate with the military.
Spartacus Roman gladiator who led the largest slave rebellion of all time.
Triumvirate Group of three men who held power over the Roman government.
Julius Caesar Roman general who was elected Dictator for Life. Overthrew the First Triumvirate and was ultimately killed by the Senate.
Rubicon A river in ancient Rome. Caesar's crossing this river amounted to a declaration of war against Pompey.
Augustus Caesar Originally Octavian. First Roman Emperor.
Pax Romana The period of Roman peace.
