Terms	Definitions
browser	a program used to explore the Internet.
chat	a way people in different places can "talk" to each other by typing their words into a computer.
search engine	One of many different software programs you can use to find Web sites, Web pages, and Internet files.
database	collection of reliable research material stored on a regulated website
cursor	A blinking line or shape on the screen that tells you where the next character will go
download	to get a file from the Internet, and save it on your own computer or flash drive.
antivirus	a program that finds and destroys computer viruses
icon	a tiny picture on the screen that represents a program or file.
phishing	Emails/Websites that are used in an attempt to trick a user into giving up private information.
monitor	the TV-like part of the computer that you look at to see information
spam	unwanted commercial email
software	the programs that run on a computer
URL	the address of a website on the World Wide Web.
USB	Universal Serial Bus: universal ports by which peripherals are connected to the computer
virus	a computer program that was written to purposely damage computer systems
hardware	the parts of a computer system that you can touch (ie. mouse, monitor, printer...)
upload	to send a file from your computer to another system, across the network.
Call Number	a number or set of letters used in libraries to organize books and indicate where they can be found on the shelves.
