Repetition The use of any element of language-a sound, word, phrase, clause, or sentence-more than once
Assonance The repetition of vowel sounds followed by different consonants sounds at the end of accented syllables
Consonance The repetition of similar consonant sounds at the end of accented syllables
Rhythm A pattern of beats or stresses in spoken or written language
Onomatopoeia The use of words that imitate sounds
Alliteration The repetition of initial (beginning) consonant sounds
Rhyme The repetition of sounds at the ends of words
Meter The rhythmical pattern of a poem
Refrain A line or group of lines which is repeated thorugh the poem, usually after every stanza
Poetry One of three major types of literature; the others are prose and drama
