| Assonance | The repetition of vowel sounds followed by different consonants sounds at the end of accented syllables |
| Consonance | The repetition of similar consonant sounds at the end of accented syllables |
| Rhythm | A pattern of beats or stresses in spoken or written language |
| Onomatopoeia | The use of words that imitate sounds |
| Alliteration | The repetition of initial (beginning) consonant sounds |
| Rhyme | The repetition of sounds at the ends of words |
| Meter | The rhythmical pattern of a poem |
| Refrain | A line or group of lines which is repeated thorugh the poem, usually after every stanza |
| Poetry | One of three major types of literature; the others are prose and drama |
