Salon Was a room in the mansions of wealtlhy women. There they held regular social gatherings where they discussed ideas.
Denis Diderot He created a large set of books which contributed to many large articles and essays and called it the Encyclopedia. Its writings angred both the French Government and the Catholic Church beacuse it helped spread Enlightment ideas all over Eourpe.
Baroque European art of the 1600s and early 1700s. Was very ornate and found in elaborate palaces.
Mozart Was a composer of classical music which was a new, lighter, and more elegant style of music during the Enlightment.
Rococo Was Ornate, highly decorated.
Enlightened Despots (Absolutism) Was when monarch kings agreed with the philosophes ideas in which the ruler respected the peoples rights. They were convinced to rule justly and made many reforms.
Frederick II (Frederick the Great) King of Prussia from 1740 to 1786. He granted many religious freedoms, reduced censorship, and improved education. He called himself the "servant of the state" making it clear it was his goal to serve and strengthen his country.
Joseph II Ruled Austria from 1780 to 1790. He intoduced legal reforms and freedom of the press. Also supported freedom of religon and made a reform where peasents would be paid in cash for their labor.
Maria Theresa This was the first woman monarch to rule in modern Central Europe in 1740. She was the eldest daughter of Charles VI. She had to fight to keep control of her empire.
Catherine II (Catherine the Great) She ruled Russia from 1762 to 1796. She presented proposals for reforms based on the ideas of Montesquieu and Beccaria. Laer limited the peoples freedom after a revolt of serfs. She also greatly expanded the land area of Russia.
War of Austrian Succession This war was over the inheritance of the throne by Maria Theresa, for the Salic law prevented a woman from solely ruling the state
The Seven Year's WarStarted in 1754 and it was fought in Europe, the West Indies, America, the Philippines, Africa, and on the ocean. In Europe, the two sides fighting were Britain and Prussia against France, Spain, Austria, and Russia. The French wasted so many troops in Europe that they were unable to put enough forces into America.
