Umakishtar / Cyaxares Temporary leader of the Medes when they whupped Assyria in 614; caused Babylon to make the Median wall.
Ishtumegu / Astyages Leader of the Medes. When the Medes rebelled against him, Cyrus II was able to defeat him and gain control of all of the Zagros.
Achaemenes Ancestor of the dynasty in Faros, south of Elam and Medea. Hence, the Achaemenids.
Cyrus II (the great) 550: Ownt Ishtumegu. 547: Conquered Lydia. 539: Took Babylon. Basically, Cyrus conquered Mesopotamia and part of Anatolia.
Cambyses Expanded Persian empire into Egypt, and overextended himself. Became king of Egypt.
Darius Usurped Persian throne, expanded more into Africa, exacting tribute from Nubia. Also took Lydia. Also fought in Scythia. Also went to Greece and lost at Marathon.
Xerxes Failed to expand the Persian empire, was obsessed with fighting Greece. Sucked out.
Cyrus III (the younger) 401: Hired 10,000 Greek mercenaries to fight his brother Artaxerxes for control of the Persian empire. Was winning pretty hardcore until he got his ass ganked.
