| Light Blue | Contains Sodium Citrate. Used to obtain whole blood or plasma. Most often used for coagulation tests, such as Prothrombin Time. |
| Red | Does not contain anticoagulant. Used to obtain clotted blood or serum. Serum is used for serologic tests and most blood chemistries. |
| Red/Gray (speckled) | May have gold top instead. Does not contain anticoagulant. Used to obtain serum. Contains a gel that separates the cells from the serum when the tube is centrifuged. |
| Green | Contains Heparin. Commonly used to collect blood specimens to perform blood gas determinations and pH assays. |
| Lavender | Contains EDTA. Used to obtain whole blood or plasma. Most commonly used to collect a blood specimen for a CBC. |
| Gray | Contains Sodium Floride / Potassium Oxlate. Used to obtain whole blood or plasma. Most commonly used to perform a glucose tolerance test (GTT). |
| Dark Blue | Contains either Heparin or no additive at all. Made of a specially refined glass and rubber stopper. Used for the detection of trace elements, such as lead, zinc, arsenic, and copper. |
