Key vocal and concepts about measuring and graphing motion
Terms | Definitions |
|---|---|
Reference point | An object that appears to stay in place that can be used to tell if another object is in motion |
Motion | an object's change in position over time relative to a reference point |
Speed | The distance that an object travels divided by the time it took to travel the distance (ex: 5 miles / hour) |
Average Speed | Total distance divided by total time; it is an average because it is very rare that the speed will be constant. |
Velocity | Speed in a particular direction ( ex: 5 mi/hr South) |
Acceleration | The rate that velocity or speed changes; an object accelerates if the speed increases or decreases or if it changes direction |
Centripetal Acceleration | Acceleration in a circular motion |
Friction | A force that opposes(works against) motion |
Net Force | The combination(total) of all forces acting on an object |
Newton (N) | The metric (SI) measure of force |
Force | A push or a pull on an object; has size and direction |
Balanced Force | equal to 0 N, will not cause a change in motion |
Unbalanced Force | equal to anything but 0 N; will cause a change in motion |
Mass | The amount of matter in an object |
Gravity | a pulling force of attraction between objects due to their masses |
Weight | a measure of the gravitational force on an object |
