Phloem The vascular tissue through which food moves
Xylem Vascular tissue through which the water and minerals move through
Seeds Structures that contain a young plant from drying out
Embryo The young plant that develops from the zygote, or fertilized egg
cotyledons One or more seed leaves in the embryo
Seed coat the outer covering of a seed
Germination it occurs when the embryo begins to grow again and pushes out of the seed

Root cap it protects the root from injury from rocks as the root grows through soil
Root hairs They absorb water and minerals and help to anchor the plant in the soils
Stems They carry substances through the plant's roots and leaves
Woody stem they are hard and rigid, like trunks and trees.
Herbaceous stem often soft
Cambium it divides to produce new phloem and xylem
Leaves They capture the sun's energy and carry out the food
Stomata The pores that open and close to control when gases enter and leave the leaf
Transpiration The process by which water is lost through a plants leaves
