| figurative language | a way of writing that doesn't mean exactly what it says. instead it has a different meaning than what is written |
| simile | comparing 2 unlike things using LIKE or AS |
| metaphor | comparing 2 unlike things without using LIKE or AS |
| personification | giving human characteristics to non-human characters |
| hyperbole | an extreme exaggeration |
| sensory details/imagery | details that relate to the senses: what the character sees, feels, smells, tastes, or touches in the story |
| plot | the events that happen in a story, or what the story is about |
| setting | where and when the story takes place (what time) |
| conflict | a problem between 2 characters in the story or a character and the environment |
| theme | the "big idea" in a story or what we can learn from it |
| resolution | how the conflict is solved |
| climax | the most exciting part of the story. usually where the main character begins to solve the conflict |
| mood | the feeling you get from a writer's words in a story |
| cause and effect | the cause come first, and then it makes something else happen |
| making inferences | when you can assume or guess something in a story that isn't told to you directly. (a guess based on facts from the story) |
| compare and contrast | when you are asked to do this about 2 characters in a story, you should tell how they are alike and different |
| point of view | the perspective in which the author chooses to write |
| first person | the author tells the story directly to you, from his or her point of view, or the main character's. uses I's and WE's in the story. |
| third person | the author tells about the characters and what they do in the story. the words I or ME won't be used unless it's in a quote from a character |
