Acculturation | when the cultural traits of a group or individual, change as a result of contact with a different culture; cultural change. Hint: an immigrant moving and learning a new culture |
Assimilation | the acceptance, or adoption by one social/cultural group of traits usually associated with another group. |
Culture | socially transmitted behavior patterns, beliefs, institutions, values, language, arts, materials, etc. that are the products of human work and thought. |
Cultural Diffusion | the process of spreading culture from one point of origin. |
Culture Shock | confusion and anxiety affecting a person who is suddenly exposed to a foreign or alien culture. |
Ethnicity | having a certain physical, mental, or cultural characteristics in common with others of the same group. |
Ethnocentrism | the concept that the attitudes, beliefs, and customs of one's own group most important, and a basis for judging all other groups: feeling of superiority over other groups. |
Genocide | the planned extermination of a particular group of people; usually based on race, ethnicity, or nationality. |
Race | a distinct human population with a comman origin. (black, white, asian) |
Racism | extreme prejudice and discrimination based on race; prejudice (attitude)+(actions)=(power)+discrimination=racism |
Stereotype | generalizing, and attributing certain traits to an entire group of people; usually based on myths. |
Xenophobia | extreme fear of anything foreign, especially people; extreme culture shock. |
