This is significant because it helped settlement in the West. With so many people going out to california for gold, people started opening up businesses and permently moving to California.

Zachary Taylor 1849-1850
California Gold Rush
This is significant because it helped settlement in the West. With so many people going out to california for gold, people started opening up businesses and permently moving to California.
Millard Filmore 1850-1853
Compromise of 1850
This is significant because it delayed war between the North and the South for another ten years. By making it so that if a new state became a free state, another had to become a slave state to keep it even.
Franklin Pierce 1853-1857
Kansa-Nebraska Act
This is significant because it caused tensions with slavery to rise. The act stated that Kansas and Nebraska could choose to be slave states or free states. This lead to a huge debate between them and also lead to a Kansas masssacure known as Bleeding Kansas
James Buchanan 1857-1861
Confederacy is formed
This is significant because this was when tension about slavery in America reached it's peak. With the southern states secceding from the Union, they lead the way to the bloodiest war in U.S. history.
Abraham Lincoln 1861-1865
The Civil War
This is significant because it solely had to do with slavery in America. The end result was the end of slavery and America having their most bloodiest war in their history
Andrew Johnson 1865-1869
13th,14th,and 15th amendments
This is significant because this showed that Africans Americans were no longer considered slaves. They were now considered American citizens who had the same rights as white americans and had also the rights to vote like white americans also,
Ulyssyes S. Grant 1869-1877
Corrupt government
This is significant because due to the Grant administration having so many corrupt members, including the vice president, americans lost their faith and trust for the federal government
Rutherford B. Hayes1877-1881
End of Reconstrucution
This is significant because it left southern African Americans unprotected. With the Northern military that protected them from the white southerners gone, southern black's newfound rights decreased more and more thanks to the Jim Crow laws passed by southern state governments
James Garfield 1881
His death
This is significant because the reason behind the assassination had to do with the corrupt spoils system and getting a civil service job. Garfield's death made american citizens call for the reform of civil service
Chester A. Arthur 1881-1885
Civil Service Act
This is significant because it ended corruption in the civil service jobs. The new act stated that if someone was to be given a civil service job, it would be based off the person's skills, not be the person's connections.
Grover Cleveland 1885-1889
War between native americans and white settlers:
This is significant because this meant the end of the Western territory. The last of the Indian Territory was sold to white settlers, and native americans were either dead or facing poverty in reservations.
