Hindsight Bias "I knew that all along"- makes people overconfident about the validity of their judgements
Hypothesis a hunch, an educated guess
Theories an organized set that explains and predicts observed events
Correlation vs. Causation correlation does not prove causation- the two factors could cause one another, or there may be an underlying cause
Survey Research research with surveys- must be careful about the representativeness of the sample and make sure people will be honest
Experimental Research searching for cause and effect
Random Assignment eliminates all extraneous factors- assigns people to either a control group or treatment group
Ethics Psychologists must determine the difference the harmless experiments and and risky experiments
Informed Consent experimenters have to tell participants enough about the experiment to enable them to choose to participate
Debriefing post-experimental explanation of a study to its participants. Usually discloses any deception and asks participants about their feelings
Self-Concept a persons answer to the question "Who am I?"

Self and Culture Independent view of self- individualistic culture
Interdependent view of self- collectivist culture
Self Esteem a persons overall self-evaluation or sense of self worth
Locus Of Control -the extent to which people perceive outcomes
internally- controlled by their own efforts
externally- controlled by outside forces
Learned Helplessness a sense of hopelessness and resignation learned when a human or animal perceives no control over repeated bad events
Self-Serving Bias tendency to perceive oneself favorably- when good things happen, we credit ourselves. when bad things happen, we credit the environment
Self-Presentation "Impression Management"
-wanting to present a desired image to both an external audience and to ourselves
Perceiving our Social World -we respond not to reality as it is, but to reality as we construe it
-view our social world through our beliefs, attitudes and values
Attribution Theory -how we explain others behavior
1. internal dispositions- enduring traits, motives, and attitudes (dispositional) or
2. external situations (situational)
Cultural Differences In Eastern cultures, they are more sensitive to the importance of situations.
Western Cultures- assume that the people, not situations cause events.
Misinformation incorporating "misinformation" into one's memory of the event, after witnessing an event and receiving misleading info about it- we look at the parts we want to remember instead of the whole story
Illusory Thinking perception of a relationship where none exists, or a perception of a stronger relationship than actually exists
ex: When I straighten my hair, it always rains
Self-Fulfilling Prophecy a belief that leads to its own fulfillment
Foot-In-The-Door People who have agreed to a small request will comply later with a larger request
Lowball start out with a huge request and end up agreeing to something smaller
