Analogy a relationship or connection between word pairs
Antonyms words with opposite meanings
Author's Purpose is the reason for writing
Cause the reason something happens
Characters are people or animals in a story
Chronology time order
Compare is to find what is alike or the same
Compound Word is two small words put together to form a third, new word
Contrast is to find what is different or dissimilar
Fact real information that can be proved
Opinion Information that doesn't have to be real, but what a person thinks or believes
Effect the result of something happening
Flashback an event that happens before the story begins, but is decribed after the story starts
Homonyms words that sound alike, but have different meanings
Imagery makes a picture in your mind, usually using your five senses
Foreshadowing a clue or hint about an event later in the story
Inference a reasonable guess or conclusion you can make about information in a reading
Main Idea the most important idea ina reading.
Metaphor a comparison
Mood the feeling a reader gets from a text
Multiple-meaning Words have more than one meaning
Paraphrase retell a passage in your own words, including the main idea and supporting details
Personification shows human feelings or actions in animals or things
Plot is the events or actions of a story
Point-of-view how the narrator sees and tells the story
Prefix a word part added to the beginning of a word
Problem Resolution the outcome or conclusion of a story
Root the part of a word with the main meaning
Sequence the order of events
Setting the time and place a story happens
Simile uses 'like' or 'as' to compare
Suffix is a word part added to the end of the word
Summarize is to find and describe the most important ideas in a passage
Supporting Detail is a fact, example, or explanation that helps you understand the main idea
Synonyms are words with similar meanings
Theme is the central idea, lesson, or message of a story
