| Metaphor | A comparison of something you can't see with something you can, but does not use like or as. More difficult to recognize, and have deeper meanings. |

| Oxymoron | an apparent contradiction that seems to make sense and has underlying meaning that is readily apparent |
| Onomatopeia | the use of words to imitate sounds |
| Alliteration | the repetition of consonants to make either a predominantly hard or soft sound |
| Hyperbole | an extravagant exaggeration |
| Repetition | a key word or phrase repeated for emphasis |
| Rhyme | the last word of each line is labelled A,B,C etc. and each time a last word of a different line rhymes with it, that line is also labelled with the same letter. In this way, you establish a pattern of rhyme in a poem, and you can state what the rhyme scheme is |
