| Dust Bowl | Name given to the Great Plains. During much of the 1930s, states from Texas to the Dakotas suffered a severe drought. The topsoil dried out. High winds carried the soil away in blinding dust storms. |

| Indian New Deal | Passed by Congress. Gave Native Americans greater control over their own affairs. Ended its policy of destroying Native American religions. |
| FDR | Defeated Hoover in 1932. He defeated Hoover because people hoped that he would do great things with the economy. He wanted to increase the justices on the Supreme Court to gain support for his New Deal programs. |
| Bank Holiday | FDR closed every bank in the country for eight days because many banks were in trouble and in danger of failing. |
| Motion Pictures | These were shown so that people could escape from the reality of hard economic times. |
| FDIC | Insured savings accounts in banks approved by the government. Its goal was to prevent another Depression. |
| Social Security Act | Set up a system of pensions for the elderly, unemployed, and people with disabilities. Its goal was to prevent another Depression. The Social Security Administration still exists today. |
