Geography Handbook Terms

longitude

Distance east or west of the prime meridian, measured in degrees

latitude

an imaginary line around the Earth parallel to the equator

Equator

An imaginary circle around the middle of the earth, halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole

Arctic Circle

a line of latitude near but south of the north pole

Prime Meridan

An invisible line that runs across the 0° line of Longitude heading North and South.

degrees

The unit of latitude and longitude lines.

Tropic of Capricorn

a line of latitude about 23 degrees South of the equator

Tropic of Cancer

a line of latitude about 23 degrees north of the equator

International Date Line

an imaginary line on the surface of the earth following (approximately) the 180th meridian

Antarctic Circle

a line of latitude north of the south pole
