Building Blocks Predesigned document parts that are reusable.
Bullets Symbols that mark the beginning of each entry in a list.
Cell The intersection of a row and a column.
Characters Letters, numbers, symbols, punctuation marks, and spaces.
Chart A graphical representation of numeric data that can be inserted into Word.
Clip art Ready-made artwork, usually created with a computer, that is used to illustrate documents.
Clipboard An area of memory that temporarily stores a cut or copied selection.
Collate To print pages in order.
Columns A way to format text where it flows from the bottom of one column to the top of the next.
Content control A small program within a placeholder that saves the content entered in the placeholder and displays it automatically in all locations in the document using that same placeholder.
Copy Duplicating a selection so you can paste it into another position.
Cover page The first page of a document that provides introductory information about the document, such as the title, author, and date.
Crop To remove unwanted parts of a picture by dragging cropping handles on the sides and corners of the picture.
Cut Removing a selection from a position.
Document Written information that can be printed on paper or distributed electronically.
Drag To press and hold the mouse button and move the mouse.
Drag-and-drop Using the mouse to move or copy a selection to a new location.
Drawing objects Shapes, curves, and lines created with Word that become part of the document, rather than being a separate file.
Drop cap A large initial capital letter or a large first word used to add interest to text, such as at the beginning of a document.
First-line indent Indenting only the first line of a paragraph.
Floating object A picture that can be positioned so that text can wrap around and flow in front of or behind it.
Font The design of a set of letters and numbers.
Footer Text or graphics that prints in the bottom margin of each page in a document.
Hanging indent Indenting all the lines from the left except the first one.
Header Text or graphics that prints in the top margin of each page in a document.
I-beam The shape of the mouse pointer when you slide it over text.
Indent The space between text and the margin.
Inline object An object that moves with the text around it.
Insertion point A blinking vertical bar that signals where any text you type will appear.
Landscape Horizontal page orientation.
Leader A dotted, dashed, or solid line used to fill the empty space before a tab stop.
List A series of related words, numbers, or phrases.
Margins Areas of white space that border the text on the edges of a page.
Negative indent An indent that extends into the left margin; also called an outdent.
Nonprinting symbols Spaces, paragraph marks, tabs, and other symbols within a document.
Orphan A single line that displays at the bottom of a page.
Page borders Lines that frame the page.
Page break A command that ends a page and starts a new one.
Paragraph Any amount of text or other items followed by a paragraph mark.
Paste Placing text into another position.
Picture A digital photograph or image stored on your computer or network.
Placeholder Text in brackets, within a template, that tells you where to insert new text.
Point size A measurement for the height of characters.
Portrait Vertical page orientation.
Quick Part A type of building block made up of an image and/or text that you can create, save, and reuse.
Screenshot A picture of a computer screen or part of a screen, such as a window or button.
Select Highlight text.
Selection handles Small circles and squares at the sides and corners of the graphic.
SmartArt graphic A predesigned diagram made up of shapes containing text that illustrates a concept or idea.
Sort Rearranging selected text, numbers, or dates alphabetically, numerically, or chronologically.
Style A set of character or paragraph formats stored with a name.
Tab Used to align or position text in a document.
Table A grid of horizontal rows and vertical columns of numbers, text, or graphics.
Template A master copy, or model, for a certain type of document.
Text box A container for text that can be positioned and modified like a graphic in a document.
Text wrapping The flow of text around the edges of an object.
Themes Sets of formatting choices that include colors, fonts, and effects that were predesigned to work well together.
Thumbnails Small pictures of each document page.
Watermark Text or a graphic that appears behind text in a document.
Widow A single line that displays at the top of a page.
Word processing software Programs that let you insert and manipulate text and graphics to create all kinds of professional-looking documents.
Word wrap Feature that automatically wraps text to the next line within a paragraph when you enter new text.
WordArt A drawing tool that turns text characters into graphic images.
