1.
Afferent/Sensory: nerve fiber which carries info towards CNS
2.
Astrocytes: largest, most numerous glial cells; maintain blood-brain barrier to isolate CNS from general circulation; provide structural support for CNS; regulate ion and nutrient concentrations; perform repairs to stabilize tissue and prevent further injury
3.
Autonomic Nervous System: the part of the nervous system of vertebrates that controls involuntary actions of the smooth muscles and heart and glands
4.
Axons: a part of a neuron that carries impulses away from the cell body
5.
Cell Body: largest part of a typical neuron; contains the nucleus and much of the cytoplasm
6.
Central Nervous System: the portion of the vertebrate nervous system consisting of the brain and spinal cord
7.
Dendrites: branching extensions of neuron that receives messages from neighboring neurons
8.
Efferent/ Motor: carries impulses from CNS to the viscera and/or muscles and glands.
9.
Ependymal: lines the cavities of the brain and spinal cord with cerebrospinal fluid. The cilia help t circulate the cerebrospinal fluid to protect the CNS.
10.
Microglia: neuroglial tissue of mesodermal origin that can become phagocytic
11.
Motor Output: The conduction of signals from a processing center in a central nervous system to effector cells
12.
Nervous System: the sensory and control apparatus consisting of a network of nerve cells
13.
Neuroglia: sustentacular tissue that surrounds and supports neurons in the central nervous system
14.
Oligodendrocytes: glia cells that surround and insulate certain axons in the vertebrate brain and spinal cord
15.
Peripheral Nervous System: the section of the nervous system lying outside the brain and spinal cord
16.
Satellite Cells: surround neuron cell bodies in glanglia; protects and regulates nurtients for cell bodies in ganglia
17.
Schwann Cells: Supporting cells of the peripheral nervous system responsible for the formation of myelin.
18.
Sensory Input: The conduction of signals from sensory receptors to processing centers in the central nervous system
19.
Somatic: affecting or characteristic of the body as opposed to the mind or spirit
