New Moon

The side of the moon facing the Earth is not illuminated. We cannot see the moon

Waxing Crescent

Small sliver of the moon is illuminated on the right side

First Quarter

The right half of the moon is illuminated. In the next phase, the moon will seem even larger

Waxing Gibbous

Most of the moon's surface is illuminated except for a small sliver on the left. It is almost fully illuminated

Full Moon

The entire side of the moon facing the Earth is illuminated. It looks perfectly round

Waning Gibbous

Most of the moon's surface is illuminated except for a small sliver on the right side

Last Quarter

The left half of the moon is illuminated

Wanning Crescent

Only a small sliver of the moon in still illuminated on the left side. It is about to disappear completely
