Terms to know by the end of Chapter 4

prime number

a number that can only be divided evenly by 1 and itself

composite number

a number that can be divided evenly by more than 1 and itself

prime factorization

all the prime numbers that multiply to give us the number

factor (verb)

write a number's prime factorization

Greatest Common Factor (GCF)

the biggest number that can be evenly divided into both numbers

factors (noun)

numbers that multiply to give a product

monomial

a number, variable, or product of numbers and variables, for example: 8x

base

the number that is multiplied

exponent

tells how many times we multiply the base

power

a number with an exponent

standard form

a number without exponents

expanded form

a number with exponents showing the place value

simplest form

when the numerator and the denominator of the fraction have a GCF of 1

scientific notation

writing very large or very small numbers as the product of a number and a power of 10
