Literal taking words in their usual or most basic sense; free from exaggeration representing the exact words in the original text
Figurative departing from a literal use of words; non-literal symbolic - figurative is an antonym (opposite) of literal
Simile an expression comparing one thing to another, using the words "like" or "as"
Metaphor an expression that equates or compares two different things, without using the words "like" or "as"
Idiom an expression with a meaning different from the literal meaning of the individual words.
