Definitions

resistance in physical science, the opposition presented to the current by a material or device
battery a device that converts chemical energy to electrical energy
voltage the potential difference between two points; measured in volts
Ohms unit for resistance
volts unit of measurement that indicates the force of electricity used or produced
electric current the rate at which charges pass through a given point; measured in amperes
ampere unit used to measure electric current
direct current electric current that flows in only one direction
alternating current electric current that changes its direction repeatedly
potential difference the difference in electrical charge between two points in a circuit expressed in volts
cell in electricity, a device that produces an electric current by converting chemical or radiant energy into elctrical energy
series circuit a circuit in which the parts are joined one after another such that the current in each part is the same
parallel circuit A circuit in which the parts are joined in branches such that the potential difference across each part is the same
resistor component made of material that opposes flow of current and therefore has some value of resistance.
load item along a circuit that convert electricity into other forms of energy
circuit diagram & symbols a diagram with symbols that represent all of the components in a circuit and how they are connected.
magnetic field the region around a magnet in which magnetic forces can act
magnetic field lines lines that map out the magnetic field around a magnet
magnetic north the pole of a magnet that points to the north
magnetic south the pole of a magnet that points to the south
geographic north the direction in which the top of the Earth's rotational axis points; also know as true north
geographic south the direction in which the bottom of the Earth's rotational axis points
electromagnetism the interaction between electricity and magnetism
electromagnet a coil that has a soft iron core and that acts as a magnet when an electric current is in the coil
motor a device used to convert electric energy into mechanical energy.
generator a machine that changes mechanical energy into electrical energy
