Timeline-John's first published book was "Cup of Gold" which was published in 1929. Background Information- John Steinbeck's mother, Olivia, always encouraged her "son's love for reading and writing". Background Information- Steinbeck's father worked as the county Treasurer. His mother was a school teacher in his home town. Background Information- Steinbeck used to work as a hired hand on the nearby ranches. Steinbeck attended Stanford till 1925. He left the university without graduating to pursue his dream to become a writer. Timeline- John's first book "Cup of Gold" was published after Wall Street crashed and the world was sent into a depression. This book introduced the characters of Henry Morgan and Jamaican Pirate. Timeline- In 1935, Steinbeck's second major work was published- "Tortilla Flat". This book won the California Commonwealth Club's Gold Medal. This book earned much attention from critics, which allowed John to focus more on writing. Timeline- "Tortilla Flat" was based on the life of countrymen who loved to drink wine and laugh together. This book was not based on any of his family members- her dad was a county treasurer and his mother a school teacher. This book was based on a life John never got the chance to have. Timeline- In 1942, John's book "Great Depression" was published. The Great Depression ended with the start of WW2. The information of the book were facts and events that took place during The Great Depression, which Steinbeck lived though. Timeline- In 1937, Steinbeck published "Of Mice and Men" during The Great Depression. The characters in the book are wondering around looking for work, just as most men were doing during The Great Depression. Grapes of Wrath- GOW was set in the time of The Great Depression. The book is based on a family of sharecroppers who are driven from their land because of the California Dust Bowl. Grapes of Wrath- Although the book received the Pulizer prize, the book also caused controversy.
