Nonsteroidal hormones = are made of amino acids and do not cross cell membrane easily
Steroidal hormones = cross cell membrane easily
Adrenal glands = secrete epinephrine and aldosterone
Anterior pituitary gland = secretes growth hormone and adrenocorticotropic hormone
Thymus gland = releases thymosin, promotes the production of T cells
Hypothalamus = regulates heart rate and blood pressure
Aldosterone = stimulates the body to retain sodium and water, and is important in maintaining blood pressure
Antidiuretic hormone = released by posterior pituitary gland
Atrial natriuretic peptide = hormone released by the heart to regulate blood pressure
Cortisol = hormone that decreases inflammation and pain
Erythropoietin = stimulates red blood cell formation (red puttin' it in)
Melatonin = regulates circadian rhythms
Oxytocin = released by posterior pituitary gland, in males it stimulates the contraction of the prostate and vas deferens during sexual arousal
Parathyroid hormone = (PTH) released by the parathyroid glands
Acromegaly = s/s include enlarged hands and feet, gaps between teeth, and thick skin
Cretinism = congenital hypothyroidism
Diabetes mellitus = leads to high glucose levels due to inadequate secretion of insulin
Dwarfism = condition with insufficient growth hormone in childhood
Gestational diabetes mellitus = temporary condition in some pregnant women
Giantism (Gigantism) = results from excess growth hormone in children
Grave's disease = aka hyperthyroidism, s/s increased heart rate, insomnia, and weight loss, associated with goiters and exophthalmos
Myxedema = insufficient secretion of thyroid hormones
