Definitions

Real Number The set of all rational and irrational numbers
Natural Number counting numbers or all positive whole numbers beginning with 1
Whole Numbers Natural numbers ( counting numbers) and zero; 0, 1, 2, 3...
Irrational Numbers Numbers that cannot be expressed as terminating or repeating decimals
Rational Number A number that can be written as a/b where a and b are integers, but b is not equal to 0.
Integer The set of whole numbers and their opposites
Commutative Property a + b = b + a and ab = ba; changing the order does not change the sum or product
Associative Property Changing the grouping of numbers will NOT change the value. For example: (7 + 4) + 8 = 7 + (4 + 8) also works with multiplication
Multiplicative Inverse Property Any number multiplied by its inverse (reciprocal) will equal one
Multiplicative Identity Property any number or variable multiplied to one is that number or variable
Additive Inverse Property Any number added to its negative will equal zero...example -8 + 8 = 0
Additive Identity Property Any number or variable added to zero is that number or variable
Distributive Property a(b + c) = ab + ac
Multiplicative Property of Zero product of any number and zero is zero (a x 0=0)
