Definitions

Composition The way you arrange the subject, background, and other parts of a photograph
Subject This should be the star of the photograph
Contrast The amount of difference between the brightest and darkest values in an image.
High Contrast Be careful of _____ _____ details that appear away from your subject, as they will draw the eye from your subject.
Depth of Field The zone of sharp focus in a photograph.
Aperture One of three critical exposure controls; an opening made by an adjustable diaphragm, which permits light to enter the camera lens and reach the image sensor.
Autoexposure A feature that puts the camera in control of choosing the proper exposure settings.
Backlight Bright light coming from behind your subject, which can cause your subject to be underexposed in autoexposure shooting modes.
Burst Mode A special capture setting, offered on some digital cameras, that records several images in rapid succession with one press of the shutter button. Also called continuous capture mode.
File Format A way of storing image data in a digital file. Popular digital camera formats include Camera Raw, JPEG, and TIFF.
Card Reader A device used to transfer images from your CompactFlash, Secure Digital (SD), or other type of memory card to your computer.
Compression A process that reduces the size of the image file by eliminating some image data.
Crop To trim away unwanted areas around the perimeter of a photo, typically done in a photo-editing program.
Digital Zoom A feature offered on most digital cameras; crops the perimeter of the image and then enlarges the area at the center. Results in reduced image quality.
Image Sensor The CMOS or CCD chip in your camera that senses light and converts it into digital information.
