Definitions

Epithelium A sheet of cells that covers body surface and lines body cavities
simple squamous epithelium contains a single layer of flat cells; found in the body where filtration (kidney) or diffusion (lungs) are priority processes
Squamous cell shape flat hexagon
cuboidal cell shape cubed hexagon
culumnar celll shape Column hexagon
squamous cells found where diffusion and filtration occur
cuboidal cells and Columnar cells In tissues they are used for absorption and secretion
Squamous characteristics Thin and permeable, forms walls of alveoli in lungs
Stratified epithelium thick membrane with several cell layers, surface cells can contain keratin. protects underlying tissues in areas that can be rubbed or injured
transitional epithelium a type of tissue consisting of multiple layers of epithelial cells which can contract and expand.(bladder)
Areolar connective tissue functions: supporting and binding other tissues (the job of the fibers), holding body fluids (ground substances role), defending against infection (via the activity of white blood cells and macrophages), and storing nutrients as fat (in fat cells)
Adipose tissue a kind of body tissue containing stored fat that serves as a source of energy
reticular connective tissue Connective tissue that contains reticular fibers and cells; used to make the framework of major organs
Dense irregular connective tissue Connective tissue that is made from collagen fibers that are randomly arranged (found in fascia, heart valves)
dense regular connective tissue Connective tissue made from collagen fibers that run in the same direction (makes tendons and ligaments)
