Definitions

melting the change of state from a solid to a liquid
melting point specific temperature in which a substance changes from solid to liquid;
particles of a solid are vibrating so fast that they break free from their fixed positions
freezing change in state from liquid to solid;
particles of liquid are moving so slowly that they begin to form regular patterns
vaporization change from a liquid to gas;
takes place when particles in a liquid gain enough energy to form a gas
types of vaporization evaporation
boiling
evaporation type of vaporization that takes place only on the surface of the liquid
boiling type of vaporization that takes place on the surface AND below the surface of a liquid
boiling point temperature at which a liquid boils
depends on the air pressure of the air above it - the lower the air pressure, the less energy is required to boil
condensation changes from gas to liquid;
occurs when particles in a gas lose enough energy to form a liquid
sublimation particles of a solid gain enough energy to form a gas without passing through the liquid state
