| In 1959 in Little Rock Arkansas a rally was helf protesting the 9 African American students attending a formally all white school, Central High | However thats when President Dwight Eisenhower stepped in, people say that if he hadn't the students would have been forved to return to segregated schools, and that would have emboldened racists across the country to resist change. |
| During the fall of this year, the Govenor of Little Rock ordered the Arkansas National Guard not to allow the African American students to go to Central High School, even though they already had enrolled | The students instead went to a mixed school. There, they were more accepted then they were at Central High School. |
| There were approximately 80 African American students were interviewed to come to Central High, but only 9 were accepted. Their names were: Melba Seals, Thelma Wair, Elizabeth Eckford, Minnijean Trickey, Ernest Green, Jefferson Thomas, Gloria Karlmark, Terrance Roberts, and Carlotta Walls | These girls received a lot of torture. Melba had acid sprayed in her eyes. |
| These nine girls are the reason the Little Rock Crisis was nicknamed "The Little Rock Nine". They were greeted with mobs of angry parents, students, and citizens that yelled racist comments, physical threats and harsh chants. | When someone tripped Minnijean, she was suspended for six days. |
| The National Guard was ordered not to let the students in, so they could no longer continue their education at Central High, so they had to find another school. | They were tortured in the bathrooms, changing rooms, and classrooms. This made the goal of the Little Rock Nine practically impossible. |
| Ernest was the first to graduate. To do so, soldiers had to surround her, and although he was unfamous at the time she had a very special member in the audience. Martin Luther King was there. | After Minnijean was suspened little white cards were passed around to all off the white students saying "One down, eight to go" |
| But when she recieved her diploma, it wasn't a certificate of congratulations, instead it was a bomb threat. | The Govenor closed Little Rock's high schools for a year, rather than desegregate the. The eight remaining students went on to graduate elsewhere. |
