malnutrition | A condition resulting from inadequate consumption or excessive consumption of a nutrient; can impair physical and mental health and contribute to or result from infectious diseases. |
famine | a severe shortage of food (as through crop failure) resulting in widespread hunger, starvation and death |
calories | units used to measure energy. calories indicate how much energy in a food can be used by the body or stored in body fat |
mortality rate | the ratio of deaths in an area to the population of that area |
overpopulation | The number of a people in an area exceeds the capacity of the environment to support life at a decent standard of living. |
developing nation | a nation only beginning to develop industrially |
industrialized nation | nation with work force, longer life expectancy, and better sanitation |
poverty | the state of having little or no money and few or no material possessions |
class system | social stratification based on both birth and individual achievement |
democracy | a political system in which the supreme power lies in a body of citizens who can elect people to represent them |
wealth | an abundance of valuable material possessions or resources |
income | the financial gain (earned or unearned) accruing over a given period of time |
consumption | using goods and services |
surplus | a quantity much larger than is needed |
wants | Things that add comfort and pleasure to your life |
needs | Things that are required in order to live |
production | (economics) manufacturing or mining or growing something (usually in large quantities) for sale |
scarcity | a small and inadequate amount |
capital resources | The tools, equipment, and buildings that are used to produce goods and services |
natural resources | resources (actual and potential) supplied by nature |
human resources | People who work to produce goods and services |
specialization | the development of skills in a specific kind of work |
Human Development Index | A way of measuring quality of life using life expectancy, child survival, adult literacy, childhood education, gender equity, access to clean water, sanitation, and level of income. |
Market system | an economic system in which individuals, not the government control the production and distribution of goods and services; also called capitalism |
Stratification | Layering. Social stratification is a hierarchy of positions with regard to wealth and power. |
Standard of Living | Measures the quality and availability of necessities and comforts in a society |
Food Insecurity | the condition in which people do not have adequate access to food |
Global Hunger Index (GHI) | Score given to countries to measure their hunger threat. The higher the score, the worse the food situation of a country. Score is based on 1) the percentage of the population suffering from malnutrition 2) the percentage of underweight children under the age of five; and 3) the mortality rate of children under the age of five. |
Cash Crop | Food or other farm product grown to be sold or traded rather than used by the farm family. |
