| Term | Definition |
| Artery | carries oxygenated blood from the heart |
| Vein | carries de-oxygenated blood to the heart |
| Sclera | makes eye rigid, offers protection, white part of the eye |
| Retina | Thin, light sensitive tissue lining the back of the eye. Light reflects off. |
| Pupil | opening in the center of the iris |
| Lens | Responsible for focusing light. Can change shape to focus on nearby/distant objects. |
| Iris | colored part of eye. Dilates to make the pupil smaller/bigger to allow more/less light in. |
| Cornea | covers the eye and helps focus incoming light |
| Vitreous Humor | clear jelly like substance that gives the eye its shape |
| optic nerve | nerve fibers in the back of the eye that carries information from the eye to the brain to interpret images |
| Anterior/Posterior Chamber | in front/behind the iris |
| Macula | where the most acute vision is processed |
| Fovea | area approximately 1.5 mm in diameter within macula. Area of the greatest visual activity full of cone cells that allow precise vision |
| Choroids | carries blood vessels, found in between the sclera and the retina |
| Aqueous Humor | Maintains constant pressure in the eye |
| Conjuctiva | clear membrane that covers sclera and lines the inside of the eyelids |
| Cones | allow your eye to see color/detail, needs lots of light in order to function |
| Rods | allows your eye only to see black and white/no detail, needs some light in order to function |
| Retinitis Pigmentosa (tunnel vision) | causes the light-sensitive retina, located at the back of the eye, to degenerate slowly and progressively. |
| Astigmatism | causes blurred vision due either to the irregular shape of the cornea, the clear front cover of the eye, |
| Cataracts | clouding of the natural lens, the part of the eye responsible for focusing light and producing clear, sharp images. |
| Floaters | caused by tiny bits of vitreous gel or cells that cast shadows on the retina. Flashes occur when the vitreous tugs on the sensitive retina tissue. Caused my rubbing eyes too much |
| Detached Retina | retina peels away from its underlying layer of support tissue. |
| Colorblindness | inability to perceive differences between some of the colors that others can distinguish. Usually genetic; mostly males get it |
| Retinopathy (vision looks spotty) | refers to some form of non-inflammatory damage to the retina of the eye. sp |
| Glaucoma (similar to retinitis but not as a defined tunnel view- it could be more blotchy-looking) | leads to blindness by damaging the optic nerve. A common eye condition in which the fluid pressure inside the eyes rises because of slowed fluid drainage from the eye. |
