Compatible

A term that describes hardware and software that can work together

Computer

Cursor

A symbol sauch as a sqaure or underline bar that shows where you are on the screen

Disk

A flat circular piece of metal or plastic coated with magnetic material used to store data

Disk Drive

The device used to store data on a disk and to read what is stored on a disk

Expansion slot

A connector inside a computer designed to allow a user to add printed circuit boards and daughter boards to the mother board

Floppy Disk

A reusable magnetic storage medium that uses a thin mylar circular disk as the storage surface

Hard Copy

Output that is printed on paper

The physical parts that make up a computer system-for example Keyboards, printers,and so on

Intergrated circuit

1,024 storage units often rounded to 1,000 to measure a computers memory

To put a programinto a computers primary memory from a disk or tape

A measure of speed, one million cycles per second

Monitor

A video display deviceor screen used for showing output

Motherboard

The main circuit board of a computer housing the microprocesser and providing the means of connecting all the componets that make up the computer

Mouse

An input device that is rolled on a smooth surface to move the cursor

Output

The step in the data processing flow in which information comes from a computer as a result of processing

Peripheral device

A device that is attached to the computerand aids in input and/or output

Primary Memory

The section of the computerthat holds instuctions, data, and intermidiate and final results during processing

Printer

A machine that prints characters or other images on paper

Processing

The second step of the data processing flow in which the computer acts on data

Program

A set of step by step instuctions that tell a computerexactly how to do a certain task

Programming Language

a code in which a computer program is written

RAM

Form of primary memory in which instructions and data can be read,written, or erased

Read

Term used to describe the computers activityof getting an item in memory and interpriting it

ROM

Form of primary memory that holds items that can be read but not erased or changed by normal computer input

Scanner

A machine that changes images from paper or photos into digital form that the computer can use

Secondary storage

All storage materials other than primary memory

Simulation

A computer program thatimatates a real world situation

Soft copy

A temporary display of output seen on a monitor

Software

Programs, or instructions, that tell a computer exactly what to do
