| reliable narrator | A narrator that appears to be trustworthy and would have no outside interests to protect. Usually a 3rd person narrator, but not always. |
| unreliable narrator | Their interpretataion of events is different from the authors. |
| personification | nature or human with human/nonhuman qualities |
| plot | The sequence of events in a literary work. The four parts are exposition, complication, climax, and resolution. |
| pun | a "play on words" based on the multiple meanings of a single word or on words that sound alike but mean different things |
| quatrain | a stanza or poem of four lines, usually with alternate rhymes. |
| rhythm | the beat of a poem determined by a patterned number of syllables in each line or stanza |
| rhyme scheme | the pattern of rhymes in a poem |
| simile | a comparision using like or as |
| soliloquy | talking to oneself (esp. in a play);monologue |
| sonnet | a 14 line poem made up of 3 quarains and 1 couplet ex: Shakespeare's 154 sonnets |
