Learn mode restored

Saturday, February 10th, 2007

This afternoon, the file for Learn mode get mysteriously wiped. I’ve restored it from my code repository and it should function fine now. I’m looking into the cause of this problem, and if you notice any other issues, post them here. I was making some small updates to Quizlet today, and some saving problem must have arisen. Thank you to the people who reported this problem.

While I’m here, I might as well give a quick update on Scatter. I’ve built it to work outside of Quizlet (as well as inside it), so you will be able to embed it in your own site as a sort of widget. I’ve been testing it on some other sites, and it works beautifully. I’m really looking forward to releasing it! Today I also completed the automatic saving of “Ignore” and “Prompt” preferences. These features will be released in the next major upgrade of Quizlet.

Even more tangential, I upgraded this blog to Wordpress 2.1 today. It’s a great update, I highly recommend it if you use WP for your blog.

The most missed term on Quizlet, and other stats

Friday, February 9th, 2007

More than anything else, people are missing Menstrual Cycle. It’s the most missed term on Quizlet, with 188 incorrect scores logged. That’s just funny :)

Also near the top of the list, is Jefferson City → Missouri. I guess we can call that the least well-known of the US State Capitals. Sorry, Jefferson City.

The award for the most used set on Quizlet goes to Reprise Ch. 23 - Relative Clauses. Second place goes to the previously mentioned US State Capitals list.

Sixteen is the most common age among Quizlet users, with 387 users. Runners up are 15-year-olds, 17-year-olds, and 26-year-olds. This data is from the birth year entered when users sign up.

The user with the most terms entered is suresh, who has imported some very large word lists. He comes in at 11,034 terms.

I may only have entered 3,118 terms, but no one is touching my 68 created sets.

Finally, one last statistic that consistently blows me away is that even though I created Quizlet, I’m not its biggest user. That honor goes to my good friend KevinFace.

Well that was fun. Perhaps I’ll make this a regular thing State of The Quizlet item. Let me know if there’s any other interesting data you think would be cool to find.

Sneak Preview: The Scatter Game

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

I’ve got a sweet little demo video of a new feature I’m working on.

Using 5 random terms of a set, the game scatters words and definitions all over the page and has you drag correct pairs onto each other. It’s a game similar to Memory, but more fun. To compete with yourself, the game includes a timer at the top.

What you see below is a prototype of the functionality, and it will certainly be more refined in the final product.

If you have any suggestions or ideas for this game, or have an idea for an even better game, post a comment. Thanks.

5000 users and going strong.

Quizlet passed 5000 registered users Monday night, all in just 19 days since launch! As I write this post, the current count is 5327 users, and 290 in the last 24 hours. Thank you to everyone who has blogged about it, referred their friends, and added their contributions to the rapidly growing database of terms.

For those interested, Firas Durri has a fun interview of me on his blog.

On the coming agenda, I have the following improvements:

  1. Mootools 1.0 upgrade. I’m a little worried about this because of the backwards-compatibility issues. I’ve upgraded and changed old functions to their new counterparts, but I’m still worried that there might be some wayward problems caused by the upgrade. It’s kind of a black box. Upgrading to 1.0 will allow me smoother movement effects, better color effects, and generally greater possibilities for who-knows-what (read: games).
  2. Saving of testing preferences so that you don’t have to reset them every time (Ignore, Prompt, etc.).
  3. More networking capabilities. I’m working on a networking page that will help you find your friends on Quizlet by entering their email addresses or usernames. Also, it will allow you to invite friends to your groups or Quizlet in general. Should be cool…
  4. Automatic scroll-to-bottom after adding a new term to the end of a set list.
  5. Some random bugfixes from feedback reports.

Just to emphasize the last item, the feedback that’s been coming in from the feedback bar has been great. I read every one of them, but I can’t respond to all of them. It’s all very useful, and it’s telling me a lot about what’s broken and what needs improvement. Thanks to everyone who has sent something in!
